Cushion Diamond With Chunky Light Reflection

Q:

Hello Liz,

I just recently purchase the following diamond from James Allen, and wanted to get hot quick opinion on it.

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.94-carat-d-color-si1-clarity-sku-611714

I’m concerned that perhaps the diamond is too shallow, and therefore will be less brilliant. I know this is hard to judge without seeing it in person, but any professional opinion you could provide on the diamond would be so helpful.

Thank you very much for your help.

Derek

Hi Derek,

Cushion cut diamonds can be very tricky. There are many length/width combinations along with different pavilion facet patterning that gives many cushion cuts an entirely different look.

A quick review of your .94ct D SI1 tells me that the diamond is suffering from some light leakage through the pavilion under the crown. If you view the HD video you’ll see that the center of the diamond is gray/watery looking which means the facets are not reflecting light back to your eyes. The diamond will look lackluster as a result.

If you are willing to return the diamond, I recommend instead this 1.02ct G VVS2 for $3,873.00: https://www.ritani.com/diamonds/cushion-diamond-1-02-Carat-G-color-GIA-certified/D-Z1F59W

1.02ct G VVS2

The facet pattern of this Cushion Modified Brilliant is reminiscent of the early 1900’s and will elicit a more broad and chunky light reflection that better compliments the classic length/width of the traditional cushion cut.

This diamond has more ‘pop’ and personality and reflects light much better. The facet pattern is reminiscent of the early 1900’s and will elicit a more broad and chunky light reflection that better compliments the classic length/width of the traditional cushion cut.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions!

Best,

Liz

Liz,

Thank you so much for the recommendation. I have been looking for a diamond with a chunky facet structure, but haven’t been able to locate one. I just went ahead and purchased that diamond and a setting from Ritani.

Thanks again!

Derek
